A Club For Passionate Woodworking Enthusiasts

About Lake Woodies

Lakewoodies

Three Decades of Craft and Community

The Lake Macquarie Woodworking Club (Lakewoodies) is a vibrant and active group that has been running for over thirty years. The club originally operated out of the Awaba Scout Hall, but as membership and equipment grew, the space became too small. Under the leadership of President Graham Boot, the search for a larger venue began. Graham approached the Lake Macquarie City Council, who offered the use of the Marmong Point Community Hall, provided the club took responsibility for its maintenance and upkeep. After finalizing the lease, the club moved in, bringing all their tools, saws, and routers with them.

The hall needed some TLC, so the members enthusiastically got to work, hammering, sawing, sanding, painting, and—occasionally—swearing, to bring the hall up to standard. Since then, the club has remained active, with members building hundreds of wooden toys each year. These toys are distributed to children across Australia and sent to an orphanage in East Timor. Alongside this charitable work, the club has continued to expand its collection of woodworking tools, which are used by members for both club projects and their own personal endeavors. Many members do not have workshops at home, so they rely on the club’s facilities to work on their projects. Others make use of the specialized equipment the club owns.

Woodworking With Lakewoodies

The club caters to a wide range of woodworking interests, including furniture making, scroll saw work, and wood carving. One of our members, Anne, is currently crafting a full-sized Irish harp, which promises to be a stunning piece of work—stay tuned for pictures soon! The club meets every Tuesday from 9:00 am until the last cup of coffee is finished. For many members, the day is as much about conversation and camaraderie as it is about woodworking. The club also offers a library of books, VHS tapes, and DVDs that are available to members.

Newcomers are always welcome to join the Tuesday gathering, which is a laid-back affair full of tea, coffee, and woodcutting. There’s no need to worry about fitting in—Lakewoodies is an informal and inclusive club, with both men and women who share a passion for woodworking. Gender plays no role here; it’s all about enjoying the craft and the community.
